Jindřich Chylík’s Industrial Projects in Pilsen: On Industry as the Subject of Historical Research
In 1914, Jindřich Chylík, an official with the Pilsen Chamber of Commerce and Trade, published a study at his own expense titled ‘Industry in Pilsen', where he synthesized statistical data and his own research to trace the development of engineering and light industry in the local context. He had cultivated a lasting interest in the history of industry while attending Albín Bráf's seminar on national economy in the Law Faculty at Charles University. At the end of 1909, having earned his doctor of law degree, he accepted the position of draftsman in the Pilsen Chamber of Commerce and Trade, where he became involved in cultural and social life. In the years following the 1948 coup d'état, Chylík published one of his earlier works on industry in the Šumava foothills, but soon returned to his native Moravia to serve as secretary of the Brno Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Along with Bedřich Mendl, who died tragically, Chylík was one of the first Czech university graduates to dedicate himself to study of the history of industry.
