Conflicts and Agreements between Capital and Labour: On Trade Unions

pp. 26–34 (Czech), 34 (English)

This article discusses the creation and development of trade unions in Central Europe. While these trade unions aimed primarily at improving wages and working conditions, they were expected by their members to provide other services as well, especially with respect to leisurely activities. Through their activities, trade unions also increased the self-confidence of their members and helped in the overall emancipation of the workforce. The study devotes much of its attention to the escalation of employer-employee conflicts in the form of strikes, and to various efforts to soothe mutual relations by means of collective agreements.

Keywords: Czech Lands – 19th century – trade unions – strikes – collective agreements –  emancipation of the workforce
