‘On Market and Capital for the First Time in Summary, Theoretically and in Czech’: Josef Kaizl’s textbook National economy

pp. 13–23 (Czech), 24 (English)

The aim of this article is to examine Czech economic thinking at the moment of the institutionalization of the national economy in the Law Faculty at Charles-Ferdinand University, and the moment of the underlying dispute regarding two opposing methodologies: the ‘historical school' of national economy and Viennese school of ‘marginal utility'. Analysis is based on Josef Kaizl's textbook Národní hospodářství (‘National economy'), which was published in the Czech language in 1883. The author of the article compares this work and its terminological apparatus with previous Czech works, namely by František Ladislav Chleborád, Eberhard Antonín Jonák, Max Wellner, and above all Albín Bráf, who was a contemporary and colleague of Kaizl at university.

Keywords: Czech Lands – 19th century – national economy – Czech economic terminology – Czech teaching and textbooks
