“In Its Own Controversy”: František Bartoš and His Work in the Context of the Development of the Interest in Traditional Folklore
Ethnographer, linguist and teacher František Bartoš (1837 - 1906) was one of the most important personalities of Czech social sciences in the second half of the 19th century. His field research, which led to the creation of a collective fund of traditional folklore forms of expression (especially songs and language) as well as his research work, which was based on this material, was the cornerstone of ethnographic work in Moravia. It was his focus on the importance of fieldwork and collector’s activities, which raised the question in the world of social sciences, whether his work is adequately theoretically qualified while being appreciated enough. Moreover, since he is considered to be one of the romantically-inclined researchers, the question of stereotypes in viewing folkloric culture and its evaluation in the social contexts of the time is also raised.
