The essay’s focus is on original Czech operatic output from the 1860s onwards, as it was only then that a continuously growing number of new works marked the beginning of an uninterrupted tradition of Czech opera. Rather than drawing up a catalogue of social motifs and reasons for their employment, the author examines the questions of whether and how abundantly social issues at large were finding their way to the centre of attention of librettists and composers. Beyond that, she endeavours to demonstrate in what sense this may relate to the idea of the Czech national opera of this particular era.
