The first French translations of the forged manuscripts in the 19th century – Jean-Jacques Ampere, Frédéric-Gustav Eichhoff - and the methodology of comparative cultural history
Over a long period of time (1828–1973) the manuscripts were translated into French and disseminated within the intellectual and scholarly community. Thanks to several of their translators they have remained the most attractive products of Czech literature to this day in the French context. This popularity can be ascribed to the emerging tradition of French Slavonic studies and particularly to the prolific work of Louis Leger (1843–1923), who devoted a series of publications to them. This paper allows for a detailed examination of studies of the first French translations and texts revealing the assumed medieval context of the manuscripts (particularly Záboj), authored by Jean-Jacques Amp?re (1800–1864) and Edgar Quinet (1803–1875).
