Fire to reform a sinner. Karel Václav Rais's short story Sekáči (The Reapers)

pp. 199–205 (Czech), Summary 204 (English), 205 (Deutsch)

This paper deals with the motif of the fire and its place in the structure of Rais's short story Sekáči (The Reapers). The chief protagonist in this story is a type of irresponsible hero who prefers enjoying himself to looking after his wife and children, so that when he loses almost everything, he has to start taking care of his children. His new wife brings order into the family and reforms both her husband and the children. Rais's story held to the tried-and-tested values of literary Biedermeier, particularly including the harmonious family, love for one's neighbour and awareness of a suprapersonal order, linking them up in a particular way using critical realist procedures.
